Ambient sounds
Rain, or something like it, underneath whatever you are doing. Less about the sound being pleasant than about what it covers.
A noisy room is tiring in a way that is easy to miss, because the effort goes into ignoring things rather than doing anything. Conversations two desks away, a door, a notification that was not yours. Each one gets a small amount of attention whether you want it to or not.
Steady sound helps because it flattens that. It does not make the room quiet; it removes the edges that keep catching you.
Why speech is the wrong thing to put on
Podcasts and lyrics use the same machinery you are trying to use for reading, writing or thinking. That is fine when the task does not need language — tidying, walking, washing up — and it is why a podcast feels productive during those and impossible during others.
If you are trying to concentrate on words, put on something without any.
When it is worth using
- Behind a focus session, where the aim is to make one block of time feel different from the hours around it.
- In a room you cannot control — an open-plan office, a café, a house with other people awake in it.
- Winding down, where a bit of steady sound is easier to settle under than either silence or a screen.
- Alongside breathing, which is easier to stay with when there is something to breathe along to.
And when it is not: if the loudness is inside your head rather than in the room, sound will not reach it. Start with grounding instead.
How it works in Pause
Sound sits alongside a session rather than being a separate destination — you pick one when you start a pause, change it mid-session, or leave it off. There is a Sounds section if you only want the sound and nothing else.
If you connect Apple Music, playback happens on your device through Apple's own framework. Pause does not upload your library, playlists or listening history, and you can revoke access at any time in iOS Settings.
Something steady to put underneath it.
Pick a sound, or don't. It runs with a session and stops when the session does.

Sound is usually one part of a bigger fix
Turning the room down helps most when it is paired with something that changes what you are doing with your attention — a short block on one task, or a few minutes away from all of it.
